A new range of EAL qualifications will help meet demand for skilled workers to ensure that businesses and homes are safely connected to the gas distribution network.

The qualifications in ‘Network Construction Operations’ have been developed by EAL, the specialist awarding organisation for industry qualifications, in partnership with the sector skills council Energy & Utility Skills (EU Skills).

Drawing on workplace standards agreed with gas employers, the QCF-accredited qualifications will ensure that new entrants and apprentices can work safely and effectively with main and service layer pipes.

Employers can also use the qualifications to formally recognise the knowledge and skills of existing staff – boosting their confidence and helping them progress in their careers, while also enhancing the company’s workforce credentials.

Ann Watson, EAL managing director, said: “Like many of their counterparts in UK industry, gas employers are facing up to the challenge of replacing an ageing workforce, as well as improving their standing in a competitive market.

“These EAL qualifications will give network operators a recognised mark of quality, to show they are fully versed in on site working practices and can perform their roles to a consistently high standard.”

The range of three qualifications covers the installation, maintenance and safety of gas pipelines – with the level 2 options suitable for apprentices entering the gas sector via network construction operations programmes.

All three EAL qualifications are now available to training providers and colleges across England and Wales.
